Gold Rebounds Toward $4,350 After Sharp Drop as Fed Rate Hike Bets Stay Elevated

Gold prices recovered toward $4,350 an ounce on Friday after suffering a sharp decline in the previous session, as a softer U.S. dollar provided some support. However, elevated Federal Reserve rate hike expectations, higher Treasury yields and rising oil prices continued to limit gains in the precious metals market.

Spot gold (XAU/USD) rose around 0.8% to approximately $4,351 per ounce, while gold futures traded lower near $4,391. Silver also advanced, while the U.S. Dollar Index remained broadly stable.

Gold Market Rebounds After 2% Drop

Gold experienced a significant sell-off on Thursday, falling nearly 1.8%, putting the precious metal on track for a third consecutive weekly decline.

The latest rebound has been supported by a weaker dollar, but investors remain cautious ahead of key U.S. inflation data and next week's Federal Reserve policy decision.

The upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is expected to play an important role in determining the direction of gold prices and broader financial markets. Economists expect August headline CPI to increase 0.4% month over month and 3.4% year over year, while core CPI is forecast to rise 0.2%.

Hotter Producer Prices Increase Fed Rate Hike Expectations

Recent U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) data added to concerns about persistent inflation.

U.S. producer prices increased 0.4% in August, matching expectations and recording their strongest monthly increase since May. Rising energy costs have increased concerns that inflation could remain elevated.

Markets are now pricing roughly a 70% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month, creating a challenging environment for non-yielding assets such as gold.

Higher interest rates and Treasury yields generally increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, potentially limiting demand for bullion.

Rising Oil Prices Add to Inflation Concerns

The energy market is another important factor influencing the gold price outlook.

Brent crude recently moved close to $108 per barrel amid continued tensions involving the United States and Iran. Further disruption to global energy supplies could increase inflationary pressures and influence the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions.

For gold investors, the combination of higher oil prices, inflation concerns, Treasury yields and Fed rate expectations remains a key market driver.

Gold ETF Demand Provides Long-Term Support

Despite short-term pressure, investment demand for gold remains strong.

According to the World Gold Council, global physically backed gold ETFs attracted approximately $18 billion in August, marking their second-largest monthly inflow on record.

Global gold ETF holdings increased by around 121 tonnes to a record 4,189 tonnes, while assets under management climbed to approximately $615 billion.

Strong ETF demand highlights continued institutional and investor interest in gold as a potential safe-haven asset, inflation hedge and portfolio diversification tool.

Gold also gained approximately 13% in August, marking one of its strongest monthly performances in decades.

Gold Price Forecast: Can XAU/USD Recover?

Gold remains below its 200-day moving average near $4,537, an important technical level for market participants.

A sustained move back above this level could signal that the recent correction is losing momentum and potentially open the door to renewed bullish sentiment.

However, failure to regain key resistance levels could expose gold to additional downside. Some analysts see potential for gold to retreat toward the $4,200 area if selling pressure continues.

Key Gold Price Levels to Watch

  • $4,350: Immediate area around the current rebound

  • $4,400: Important psychological resistance

  • $4,537: 200-day moving average and major technical level

  • $4,697: Previous major high

  • $4,200: Potential downside support zone

What Could Move Gold Prices Next?

Gold traders will closely monitor several factors in the coming sessions:

  • U.S. CPI inflation data

  • Federal Reserve interest-rate decision

  • Fed rate hike expectations

  • U.S. Treasury yields

  • U.S. Dollar Index

  • Crude oil prices

  • Geopolitical tensions

  • Gold ETF inflows

  • Central bank gold demand

  • XAU/USD technical levels

The interaction between inflation, interest rates and geopolitical risk is likely to remain central to the gold price forecast.

Market Outlook

Gold's latest rebound shows that buyers remain active after the recent decline, but the broader outlook remains mixed.

Strong investment demand and geopolitical uncertainty continue to provide fundamental support for gold prices, while elevated Fed rate hike expectations, higher yields and inflation risks could keep the precious metal under pressure in the short term.

For traders, the next major catalysts are likely to be the U.S. CPI report and Federal Reserve policy decision, which could determine whether gold resumes its broader uptrend or faces another leg lower.

SACHFS Market View: Gold remains highly sensitive to U.S. monetary policy, inflation expectations, Treasury yields and the dollar. A break above major technical resistance could improve the bullish outlook, while renewed strength in yields and the dollar could increase downside risks for XAU/USD.
