Bitcoin dips toward $78k as as Fed, oil pressures mount
September 8, 2026
Bitcoin price moved lower toward the $78,000 level on Tuesday as stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data increased expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy, while rising crude oil prices added to concerns about inflation.
Bitcoin was trading around $78,777, down approximately 0.8%, after briefly breaking above $82,000 last week. The retreat highlights growing caution across cryptocurrency markets as investors reassess the outlook for U.S. interest rates and inflation.
Federal Reserve Rate Hike Expectations Weigh on Bitcoin
Recent U.S. labor-market data showed employers adding 162,000 jobs in August, significantly above economists’ expectations, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.1%.
The stronger employment figures increased market expectations for a potential 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate hike at the September 16 meeting. Market pricing placed the probability around 60%, although other indicators suggested a probability closer to the low-50% range.
Higher interest rates can put pressure on Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies and other risk-sensitive assets by making traditional yield-generating investments more attractive and tightening overall financial conditions.
U.S. Treasury yields have also moved higher, with the 10-year Treasury yield near 4.8%, adding another potential headwind for Bitcoin and the broader crypto market.
Rising Oil Prices Add to Inflation Concerns
The oil price rally is also attracting attention from cryptocurrency investors. Brent crude climbed above $98 per barrel, reaching its highest level in roughly six weeks.
The increase came amid heightened U.S.-Iran tensions, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global oil supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
A sustained increase in energy prices could complicate the Federal Reserve's inflation outlook. Investors are therefore watching upcoming U.S. producer price inflation (PPI) and consumer price index (CPI) data closely ahead of the September Fed meeting.
Bitcoin Still Supported by Strong August Performance
Despite the latest decline, Bitcoin remains significantly above its recent lows. The cryptocurrency gained roughly 25% during August, demonstrating strong momentum before the latest pullback.
Institutional demand has also provided support. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $1 billion in net inflows last week, extending a three-week period of positive flows.
These ETF inflows could help limit downside pressure if investor demand remains strong, although the near-term Bitcoin price outlook remains sensitive to interest rates, inflation data, Treasury yields and geopolitical developments.
Crypto Market Today: Altcoins Trade Mixed
The broader cryptocurrency market remained relatively subdued as investors adopted a cautious approach.
Ethereum gained around 0.3% to approximately $2,492.92, while XRP traded near $1.39 with little change.
Solana declined about 1%, while Cardano gained roughly 1.2%. Dogecoin also advanced around 0.9%.
Bitcoin Price Outlook
Bitcoin's next major direction could depend heavily on upcoming U.S. inflation data and changing expectations for Federal Reserve policy.
For crypto traders and investors, key factors to watch include Bitcoin support and resistance levels, Fed interest-rate expectations, U.S. CPI and PPI data, Treasury yields, crude oil prices, U.S.-Iran tensions and Bitcoin ETF flows.
With Bitcoin recently moving between the upper-$70,000s and low-$80,000s, market participants are closely watching whether the cryptocurrency can regain its recent highs or face further downside pressure.
